Nasceu em 17 de setembro de 1931 no bronx de Nova York. entrou para os Actors Studios e começou seu trabalho na televisão, para depois estrear no cinema com Marilyn Monroe num filme intitulado "Don't bother to knock" (1952). trabalhou tb na Broddway onde seu talento foi reconhecido por varios críticos de Nova York. Em 1962 seu papel em "O milagre de Ana Sullivan" lhe deu um Oscar. Trabalhou com John Ford em "Sete Mulheres", e interpreta uma sogra sedutora em "The graduate"(1967). Em 5 de agosto de 1964 casa-se com o director Mel Brooks, desde então começou a espaçar suas atuações. aparece em "The Turning Point"(1977), "Agnes de Deus" (1985) e em algumas produções independentes, "Torch Song Trilogy"(1988), entre outras.
